Starting a Small Business

Starting a Small Business

So many of us are gifted with an entrepreneurial spirit. There comes a time when we are done with the daydreaming and seriously start to weigh the pros and cons of taking the leap and starting your own small business.  Perhaps you’ve worked endless hours after your 9-5 that it’s catching up to you but you’ve built up a bit of a cushion that would allow you jump off the diving board and into the world of self-employment.  Some people just need this change in their life and are ready for a bit more freedom.  Here’s how you know you’re ready to start a small business.

Lightbulb

You’re sitting at your desk and all of a sudden, the lightbulb goes off.  It could be an idea that you’ve had in the works for some time, but it finally all makes sense.

Fear & Failure

You can accept that fact that things WILL go wrong. Ask anyone, they’ll say that self-employment is a bit like riding a rollercoaster.  Some days are really great, you’ve met your sales and others leave you scrambling and questioning your decision.

Savings

You have some money saved up, a cushion just in case things slow down.  It’s important that before you make your decision, you take into account your rent, mortgage payment and bills.  Have a plan for when (or if) things slow down.

Part-Time Gig

Instead of leaping right into it, why don’t you secure part-time employment?  Having something like this will provide you with a bit more security while also maintaining some flexibility.  If this is you, create a schedule and stick to it.  Have designated days that you run business errands, respond to emails and fill orders for your small business.

Research

You’ve read, googled and studied as much as you can about your industry. Not only will this help you learn, it can help you become a leader in your industry!
